In Memoriam

They sleep as well -- and roused from their lone grave,
Wearing their wounds like stars, shall rise again,
Joint heirs with Christ -- because they bled to save
His weak ones -- not in vain. (F.H. Doyle)

BEIRNES, DONALD W. (Flt. Sgt.)

Flight Sergeant Donald W. Beirnes has been posthumously awarded the Operational Wings of the Royal Canadian Air Force in recognition of gallant service in action against the enemy. April l5th, 1946.

BEIRNES, JACK R. (Sqd. Ldr.) D.F .C.

In July, 1944, Squadron Leader Beirnes led a formation of aircraft in an attack on a vital railway bridge over the river Orne just south of Caen. In spite of intense anti- aircraft fire and much low cloud the attack was pressed home and the bridge destroyed. In this well executed operation, Squadron Leader Beirnes displayed a high degree of skill, courage and leadership. In August, 1944, this officer again proved his skill when leading a formation in an attack against enemy mortar positions near the Forest of Grimbasq.

Bar to the D.F .C.

Now on his third tour of operational duty this officer has proved to be an outstanding squadron commander. In April, 1945, Squadron Leader Beirnes led his squadron on a rail interdiction sortie which severely disrupted the enemy's lines of communication. On another occasion he led an attack on a light cruiser. His squadron scored six hits despite heavy opposition from anti-aircraft fire. The cruiser was set ablaze and was seen to be listing to port. This officer has displayed coolness and courage throughout.

CAMPION, George A. (Sgt.) M.M.

Sergeant George Campion was awarded the Military Medal for heaving smoke grenades from an exposed position to cover the movements of engineers who were clearing an enemy minefield. The action took place on the main street of Ortona, Italy, in December, 1943. Sergeant Campion gathered a pocket full of smoke grenades from his platoon, ran 30 yards beyond the minefield into the open street, and threw them. A perfect smoke screen resulted. The engineers, who had not been able to complete their task before the smoke cleared, were driven back. Returning, Sergeant Campion laid another smokescreen which enabled them to clear the mines and this allowed the advance to go on.

Because of his determination and absolute lack of personal fear on these two occasions he contributed materially to the success of the operation.

DUNHAM. HAROLD FRANK (Gnr.)

Mentioned in Dispatches.

HARRISON, ALLAN HENRY (F .0.) D.F .C.

This officer has completed many successful operations against the enemy in which he has displayed high skill, fortitude and devotion to duty.

HAWRELECHKO. NICHOLAS J. (P.O.) D.F.M.

This airman is a vigilant and accurate air gunner who has consistently displayed a high degree of courage, skill and initiative which has been highly commendable. He has participated in numerous operational sorties including attacks against many' well defended targets. During one mission in July 1944, his aircraft was attacked by a Messerschmitt 109. Flight Sergeant Hawrelechko's clear and concise commentary enabled his captain to employ successful evasive tactics in co-operation with his fellow gunner. He then engaged the enemy fighter and destroyed it.

KALLAL, JOSEPH THOMAS (F .0.) D.F .C.

This officer has completed numerous operations against the enemy. in the course of which he has invariably displayed the utmost fortitude, courage and devotion to duty.

KALLAL, PAUL VINCENT (Sgmn.) M.M.

Assault on Lamone River and Canale Naviglo, December 11-15th, 1944. Throughout the entire period he displayed a sense of duty and appreciation of his responsibility for the maintenance of communications of the very highest order. His efforts, made with complete disregard for his own safety, were outstandingly successful, and it was very largely owing to his bravery that communications at critical stages of the battle were restored and maintained. This played a very large part in the eventual beating off of the enemy counter attacks, and maintenance of the bridgehead over the canale.

STEVENS, EDWARD (Air CpL) B.E.M.

For Meritous Service and Devotion far beyond the call of duty.

STEWART, EDWARD A. (W.O.2) D.F.C.

This Warrant Officer has completed numerous operations against the enemy, in the course of which he has invariably displayed the utmost fortitude, courage and devotion to duty.

SWINTON, H. ALISTAIR (Sgt.) M.M.

"Jerry gave us some night bombing which set Swinton's self-propelled vehicle on fire. Swinton, by the prompt use of extinguishers and at considerable risk of his life from exploding ammunition or possible exploding of the gasoline tank on the S.P., managed to save the vehicle. "Not only did his action mean saving the vehicle but a large blaze would have given our posiion away to the enemy. There were infantrymen waiting to make a surprise attack with us, it was pretty important that nothing should go wrong."

TIEDEMANN, DONALD I. (Gnr.) Croix De Guerre.

Gunner Tiedemann was headquarters exchange operator and maintenance signaller of his battery. As such he was a member of all battery advance parties and on many occasions personally set up the battery exchange in forward areas while under enemy fire. On more than ten specific occasions Gunner Tiedemann, in spite of incessant fire, went out alone to locate and repair the breaks in the line voluntarily exposing himself in order to effect the necessary repairs. The devotion to duty and personal gallantry displayed by Gunner Tiedemann, played a definite part in the continued ability of his battery to provide necessary and immediate fine support.

Our proud tribute to this gallant list is extended to "The Unknown Soldier" whose acts of heroism, self- sacrifice, and devotion to duty, were, in the stress of battle, or in lone operations, unmarked by comrades or officers, and are known to God alone.

Lord God of Hosts, Be with us yet
Lest we forget, -- lest we forget
